Hepatitis C
What is hepatitis C?
The Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is an organism that affects the liver.
People who are exposed to the virus. Approximately 80% will be chronic
carriers. HCV can cause long lasting inflammation and scarring of the
liver. There are generally no symptoms of HCV or early cirrhosis so
people do not know they are infected unless their blood is tested.
Risk Factors
- Blood
Transfusion
- IV Drug use
- Tattoos and body piercing
- Sharing Needles and razors
- Healthcare Workers
- High risk sexual behavior, multiple
partners
- Sexually transmitted disease
Individuals infected with HCV
are often identified due to their elevated liver enzymes on a routine
blood test, or because a hepatitis C antibody is found to be positive
at the time of blood donation. Once the anti body is found, other
tests can be done to provide more information. |
|
|
These tests include:-
Viral Load: An actual count of how much of virus is present in the
blood.
Genotype: Identification of the strain of the virus. There are
currently 6 genotypes and several subtypes of HCV known.
Liver
Function Tests (LFT): These tests tell us how the liver is working and
whether there is an inflammation or not
Abdominal Ultrasound: Useful to show if there some fat or tumors in
the liver.
Liver Biopsy: A sample of the Liver tissue can be examined under the
microscope to determine the amount of inflammation and scarring present.
|
|
Complications of Hepatitis C |
|
Hepatitis C is a slow
growing Virus and usually signs of inflammation in the liver do not
show up until 10-20 years after the exposure. However undetected/
untreated HCV can cause cirrhosis, liver failure, and could lead to
liver cancer. About 20-30% patients develop cirrhosis within 20-30
years after the onset of infection.
